Special Olympics to hold ski competition

The Special Olympics North Carolina Winter Games involving Alpine skiing and snowboarding will be held Sunday and Monday, Jan. 5-6, at Appalachian Ski Mountain near Blowing Rock.

Opening ceremonies will be held at 1:45 p.m. Sunday at French Swiss Ski College at Appalachian Ski Mountain.

Participants will also gather for a dinner that evening at the Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock.

During the evening, Special Olympics N.C. will present the 2013 Special Olympics NC Athlete of the Year award.
  
Athletes will be on the slopes Sunday for instruction and practice runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Alpine skiing competition and awards will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday.

Nearly 140 athletes and coaches from 23 local programs and Virginia will participate in the event.

Athletes  represent the following counties and agencies: Alamance, Avery, Beaufort/Hyde, Buncombe, Cabarrus, Cleveland, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Gaston, Guilford/Greensboro, Guilford/High Point, Iredell, J. Iverson Riddle Development Center, Johnston, Jones, Lake Norman, Lee, Mecklenburg, Orange, Pasquotank/Camden, Wake and Watauga. Special Olympics Virginia will also have a delegation participating in the Games.

Special Olympics North Carolina also hosts the Southeast Alpine Competition which will include athletes from North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. The 2014 SE Alpine Competition will be held at the French Swiss Ski College Feb. 2-4. All competition events are free and open to the public.

Special Olympics North Carolina offers year-round sports training and competition for more than 38,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

SONC offers Olympic-type competition in 19 sports on local and state levels.
