Rescuers helped carry out a man who became sick on a rugged and steep trail Sunday afternoon near Blowing Rock.

A man in his 50s had hiked with friends down Upper Thunderhole Trail, part of the Pisgah National Forest, when he became sick and could not walk back out on his own, according to Blowing Rock Fire Department. The group had walked about one mile down the trail.

Ten rescuers from Blowing Rock Fire & Rescue, Blowing Rock Police Department and Watauga Medics responded to the call, providing medical attention and using a wheel-mounted stokes basket to remove him from the woods. The trail was only a foot wide in places, with steep rocks and downed trees.

The man was taken to Watauga Medical Center, and his condition was unknown as of Monday morning.
