James Taylor to perform at Obama fundraiser

James Taylor is famous for going to Carolina in his mind. In the near future, that thought will become a reality. 

A spokesperson for Westglow Resort and Spa in Blowing Rock announced Wednesday that Grammy Award-winning musician James Taylor will perform at the resort at 7 p.m. on Oct. 12. 

Taylor will be performing as part of a fundraising dinner and concert to support President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign. 

Tickets are $500 for student and youth (those younger than 30), $1,000 for adults, with special packages for $2,500 per person that include the performance, dinner and a conversation with  Taylor.

Taylor, a native North Carolinian, is famous for a string of hit songs in the 1970s and ’80s, including his original compositions “Carolina In My Mind,” “Fire and Rain” and “Sweet Baby James.” 

He has also scored hit singles with cover versions of other songwriters’ songs, including Carol King’s “You’ve Got a Friend,” Inez and Charlie Foxx’s “Mockingbird” (with Carly Simon) and the Holland-Dozier-Holland tune, “How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You.” 

In 2008, a collection of his cover tunes, titled “Covers,” reached the No. 4 position on the Billboard Top 100 Albums chart. 

Taylor has won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Male in 1971 for “You’ve Got a Friend,” in 1977 for “Handy Man” and in 2001 for “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight.” 

He has He also won Grammys for Best Pop Album in 1998 for “Hourglass” and for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals in 2003 for “How’s the World Treating You” with singer Alison Krauss. 

In 2000, Taylor was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
