The upset bid period to purchase the Mariam and Robert Hayes Center in Blowing Rock expired Monday with Samaritan’s Purse still holding the top bid.

The Christian relief organization filed an offer of $1,493,100 on Aug. 30, exceeding the $1.422 million original bid by Wells Fargo bank.

The expansive building, its contents and the 4.5 acres on which it sits were offered for sale at auction Aug. 21.

Samaritan’s Purse plans to use the facility as a training site, conference center and meeting space to support its worldwide ministry, said Karina Petersen, media relations coordinator.

Since the closure of the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center, Samaritan’s Purse has not been able to find a facility that meets its needs closer than Asheville, Petersen said.

Petersen said no additional information could be provided as of Tuesday.

“We still have not actually received an official word that our bid’s been accepted,” she said.

The Hayes Center opened in August 2006 after being first proposed in 2000. The roughly $10 million building, which included a 348-seat auditorium, smaller theater-in-the-round, dressing rooms and meeting space, also was home to the Blowing Rock Stage Company until 2009.

The Hayes Center temporarily suspended operations in 2009 after a significant decline in revenue, and the board announced in February that the property would revert to Wells Fargo bank due to indebtedness.
