Students at Blowing Rock School have some of the most modern and up-to-date resources to work with while they are in the classroom.
On the playground, however, things are a little more dated. Some of the equipment is more than a decade old and paint is peeling off the monkey bars and other equipment.
Members of the Blowing Rock School Parent-Teacher Organization met on Sept. 19 at the school’s cafeteria.
They discussed a number of fundraising ideas for what they are calling the Blowing Rock School Playground Rejuvenation Fund.
One of the ideas is an upcoming charity basketball game between the Legends of Basketball, featuring ex-NBA and Harlem Globetrotter players, and a group of local basketball players.
The game is scheduled for Nov. 22 at the Watauga High School gymnasium.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students.
According to Watauga High School Athletic Director Tom Wright, the WHS gym can seat approximately 1,500 people in the stands.
Some of the proceeds from the gate will go toward the playground renovation fund, as will money raised from concession sales and a silent auction.
“People don’t realize that the playground is not only used by Blowing Rock School students, but also by tourists in the summertime and on weekends,” PTO organizer Kelly Doughty said.
“This will be something that benefits the entire town. We hope to have the entire community on board with this project,” Doughty said.
During Thursday’s PTO meeting, new members got acquainted with longtime members over a dinner catered by Big Mo’s Barbecue.
