A Blowing Rock Girl Scout is among three scouts in the region nominated for the Girl Scouts of the USA National Young Women of Distinction.

Michelle Marie Gavel of Denver, Katie Grace Kilmartin of Summerfield and Jerrilyn Morgan Story of Blowing Rock were nominated by Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont for the special distinction.

Each of the three young women has earned her Girl Scout Gold Award - the highest award in Girl Scouting — and was nominated for demonstrating extraordinary leadership in the completion of her community action project. The Girl Scout Gold Award is earned by fewer than 6 percent of all Girl Scouts.

NYWOD is a special honor conferred by GSUSA on 10 Girl Scout Gold Award recipients from across the nation whose final projects demonstrated extraordinary leadership, had a measurable and sustainable impact, and addressed a local challenge that related to a national or global issue.

Any Girl Scout who completed her Girl Scout Gold Award between July 1, 2011, and Dec. 31, 2012, was eligible.
Of the more than 100 eligible local Gold Award recipients, the Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont unit was allowed to select three girls for recommendation to the national level.

From the council nominations across the nation, GSUSA will select 10.

The scouts have a chance to receive a $3,000 scholarship made possible by the Ford Foundation and Kappa Delta.
