In a short, yet sweet, meeting of the Blowing Rock Town Council Tuesday evening, the council voted unanimously to approve the proposed fiscal year budget for 2013-2014.
The proposed budget includes a property tax rate set at 28 cents per $100 valuation, with slight changes to the water and sewer fees. The property tax rate remains the same as it has been for the past eight years.
The approved budget contains a 75-cent increase in both water and sewer fees per household.
All other charges and fees are unchanged, except for a new $5 fee for notary services at Blowing Rock Town Hall. Previously, the notary service was free.
The approved budget for the town of Blowing Rock totals $6,330,200.
Detailed expenses in the new budget include money for two new snow plows, Streetscape project work, paving, renovation to the American Legion Hall, a new garbage truck, a new computer server, a 2 percent wage adjustment for town employees and funds to compensate for new state regulations on unemployment benefits.
On Tuesday evening the town council also voted unanimously to:
• Approve consideration to sell two town vehicles, a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban and a 1998 Ford Explorer, through an online auction service.
• Approve consideration on a budget amendment to properly account for various items, including a newly built salt bin, a chipper truck and $3,000 for a Toyota truck that was seized after an arrest on felony drug charges. The truck was valued at between $18,000 and $20,000.
The council also voted 3-2 to approve the firm of Benchmark Consulting to serve as the official professional planning services to guide the comprehensive planning process “with an emphasis on public involvement and visioning.”
Benchmark won the consulting contract over competitor Martin McGill.
The next regularly scheduled public meeting of the Blowing Rock Town Council will be at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9, at Town Hall.
