Two motorcycle riders were killed Sunday morning in a collision in Granite Falls following a police chase that started in Blowing Rock.
According to the Hickory Daily Record, a chase started around 11:30 a.m. in Blowing Rock when a police officer saw the motorcycle weaving in and out of traffic on U.S. 321.
The chase ended as the motorcycle crossed into Caldwell County and was picked up again near the Walmart on U.S. 321 in Lenoir, the newspaper reported.
About one mile outside Granite Falls, the motorcycle collided with a vehicle turning left onto U.S. 321. The motorcycle was estimated to be traveling between 120 and 130 mph at the time of the crash, the newspaper reported.
Investigators say the motorcycle was not being chased when the collision occurred.
John Franklin, 35, of Claremont, and Allison Nixon, 22, of Conover, were pronounced dead at the scene, the newspaper reported.
