Geraldine Fuller Keener

Mrs. Geraldine Fuller Keener, 76, of Hickory, NC, passed away on Wednesday, August 1, 2012, at home following a period of declining health.

Born January 15, 1936, in Mount Airy, NC, she was the daughter of the late Paul Johnson Fuller, Sr. and Doris Bryan Fuller; and 2nd Lt., Staley Thruston Cates, USAF.

Mrs. Keener graduated from Salem Academy in Winston-Salem, NC, was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Hickory and Blowing Rock Methodist Church in Blowing Rock. Gerrie was an early member of the Hickory Service League and taught classes for the Candy-Stripers medical assistants.

She was on the Board of Directors for the Grandfather Home for Children in Banner Elk and the Family Support Center was funded by and named in her honor, the Gerrie F. Keener Center. She was a contributor to both the Blowing Rock Arts Center and the Sarasota Opera.

Survivors are husband of 55 years, Hurshell Halton Keener of the home; son, Staley Cates Keener and wife, Kathy Rowe Keener, of Hickory; daughter, Caroline Keener North of Greensboro; grandchildren, Sarah Moretz and husband, Charles, Katherine Keener and Laura Keener of Hickory, Alexandra North, Carter North and Harrison North of Greensboro; great-granddaughter, Lily Keener Moretz; brothers, Paul Johnson Fuller, Jr. and wife, Sandy, William Bryan Fuller, Sr. and wife, Rosiland, of Wilmington; brothers-in-law, Percival Clyde Keener of Raleigh, George Edward Cates and wife, Bena, of Memphis, TN; sister-in-law, Jeannie Cates Siggelkow and husband, Rodney, of Cumming, GA; aunt, Winifred Bryan Hovey of Hickory; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at St. Luke's United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 4, 2012, with the Rev. Cindy Wechter and the Rev. Mark Andrews officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grandfather Home for Children, P.O. Box 98, Banner Elk, NC 28604.

Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory is serving the family of Mrs. Geraldine Fuller Keener.
