Wind knocks down Fraser fir at Blowing Rock Citgo

The majestic Fraser fir that stood in front of the gas pumps at the Blowing Rock Citgo station at the corner of Sunset Drive and Valley Boulevard was knocked down during the fierce winds that struck the High Country Saturday Night and Sunday morning. According to Wendy Estes, daughter of service station owner Keith McDonald, the tree was originally their family Christmas tree many years ago and was planted at the gas station after the holidays when it was about eight feet tall.
By midday Monday, the tree had been cut down and hauled away.
Winds that night were recorded at Grandfather Mountain in excess of 90 miles per hour. Photo by Jeff Eason
