Watauga Schools names Baruth Counselor of the Year

Blowing Rock School’s student counselor, Kelly Baruth, has been named the Counselor of the Year for 2012 by Watauga County Schools.

The announcement was made during last week’s regularly scheduled meeting of county school employees at the Watauga High School auditorium.

“I was completely surprised,” Baruth said. “At first, I wanted to run away, but then it felt very great.”

In addition to being named Counselor of the Year for Watauga County, she is now nominated for Middle School Counselor of the Year for the state of North Carolina. The winner of that award will be announced on Oct. 20.

“It’s very humbling to be nominated for a state award in counseling,”  Baruth said. “Particularly because I was nominated by so many colleagues, parents and friends who I respect.”

Baruth’s duties at Blowing Rock School include counseling the students about problems both in the classroom and at home.

She is also the chairwoman of the Assistance Team and serves on the PBIS Team, the School Improvement Team, Diabetes Care Team, Student Services Team, Positive Behavior and Intervention Support Team and First Response Team and serves as the accountability coordinator for Section 504 and registration coordinator for the Rising Freshmen Program.

Baruth is also currently writing the school’s new anti-bullying and harassment policy.

“The students are the best part of my job,” she said. “Just seeing them grow up and being a part of that is so gratifying. I hope to help provide a solid foundation for them and make a positive impact in their lives in some small way.”

Baruth has been a counselor with Watauga County Schools since 2004. She joined the staff at Blowing Rock School in January 2007.

In addition to serving as guidance counselor, Baruth helped co-coach the volleyball team one year.
