Watauga Education Foundation awards grants to teachers

The Watauga Education Foundation puts forth an effort to make sure the artist in all children stays alive, and one of the most significant contributions to this mission is awarding $23,000 in grants to teachers throughout the Watauga County public school system.
Any faculty member employed by Watauga County Schools was invited to submit a grant application with the possibility of being awarded up to $2,000. The grants requested equaled more than $53,000, which set an application record. The majority of grant applications requested money for technology and common core nonfiction texts. Because of this, in addition to the $17,000 awarded to specific faculty members, the Watauga Education Foundation gave $5,000 to the Central Office. These funds will predominantly be used for the common core non-fiction texts, and will benefit all nine schools in the Watauga County system.
The winning faculty members were surprised in their own classrooms and offices, as well as in a special awards ceremony on Oct. 8. The most innovative and inspiring ideas were chosen and recognized by the Watauga Education Foundation executive board, with President Allison Idol leading the charge.
"Each year, we are amazed by the creativity of our teachers and, at the same time, disappointed that we are unable to fund all of the requests,” Idol said. “It is not an easy task to pick the grant recipients. The grants that are ultimately chosen have something inherently special, something that makes us want to go back and be students again, whether it be participating in a Social Studies class, taking part in a school musical or joining a club. We are continually blown away by the wonderfully imaginative ideas offered by Watauga County teachers. It makes us proud to be able to provide the funding and see those ideas come to life.”
The mission of the Watuaga Education Foundation is to enrich student learning for all Watauga County public school students by effectively promoting innovative educational experiences for children that inspire every student to achieve his or her highest potential. With events like Shooting Stars, which allows students to perform their talents to residents of the High Country the Watauga Education Foundation provides numerous opportunities for the community members to not only contribute to the students of Watauga County Schools, but also to simply be involved in the betterment of the children in our area.
