Two icons close doors
Two long-standing downtown Blowing Rock businesses shut their doors for a final time this week.
Capel Rug Outlet on Main Street closed on Saturday, and the Moody Furniture Factory on Sunset Drive will close today.
Moody’s Factory Furniture Showroom, across the street from the actual factory, will remain open.
“Charlie Moody, my great-grandfather, started the furniture factory in 1920, 93 years ago,” said factory and showroom owner Larry Moody. “The four generations that have owned it started with Charlie Moody, then to his son, B.H. Moody, then to his son, my father, Max Moody, then to me.
“Charlie Moody started it as a family business making mission-style furniture and then expanded it, making hardwood furniture for bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms.”
According to Moody, the factory has had as many as six people working at a time producing unique hardwood furniture, but that workforce has dwindled in numbers in recent years.
Moody’s Furniture Showroom will continue to sell hardwood furniture, the majority of it made in America.
According to Moody, the Moody’s Furniture Factory building is in the process of being sold and that the buyer intends to keep the old wooden building standing.
Capel Rug Outlet
Capel Rug Outlet, owned by Len. A. “Al” Capel, closed for good on Saturday after a long-running, going-out-of-business sale.
The building, originally built in 1957, was recently sold for $1.25 million.
According to staff at Capel Rug Outlet, the remaining inventory will be moved to the Capel family’s other store in Raleigh.
Many residents and visitors are familiar with the Capel Rug building on Main Street because of the mural on the side of the building.
Given to the town of Blowing Rock from artist Robert Johnson in July 2006, the mural is titled “Flora of the Mountains” and is made up of several large panels depicting native flowers and medicinal plants from the Appalachian Mountains.
At one time, the 6,708-square-foot building was the site of popular public auctions during the summertime.
