Scotchman in Blowing Rock to close for good
Employees cited the lack of business the store has experienced since its gasoline pumps were removed two months ago. The pumps and the large underground holding tanks were removed as part of the widening of U.S. 321 from a two-lane road to a four-lane highway.
The highway widening project began last fall and is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2015.
Despite the decrease in business, the Scotchman continued to be a popular meeting place for regulars who would convene at the store each morning for coffee, snacks and a look at the wide variety of newspapers and publications the store offered.
According to Keith McDonald, owner of Blowing Rock Citgo, across the street from the convenience store, the Scotchman has been open in that location for nearly 20 years. McDonald stated that before the Scotchman opened, the site was the location of a Citgo gas station, an Esso station and a garage.
One employee of the Scotchman stated that there has been some kind of store on that corner in Blowing Rock for at least 100 years.
The Scotchman line of convenience stores is run by a parent company called The VPS Convenience Store Group. The group also operates stores under the names Carolina Pride, Everyday Shop, Young’s, Next Door Store, Village Pantry, Li’L Cricket and Cigarette City in North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Illinois.
