Parkway bike ride to benefit Special Olympics
The Boone Police Department is organizing a challenging
fundraiser for North Carolina’s Special Olympic athletes — a 469-mile bicycle
Joining the police department in the effort are members of the Watauga Democrat, Robson Forensic Elite Cycling Team and members of the Boone community.
An eight-member group will ride from one end of the Blue Ridge Parkway to the other, beginning May 13 and ending May 18, to raise funding and awareness for Special Olympics North Carolina.
One of the highlights of the event will be when the group passes through Boone, where local Special Olympic athletes will join the riders in Boone for a spin and see them off on the rest of the journey.
Since 1987, law enforcement officers across the state have worked to raise money for Special Olympics, and in 2013, raised more than $1 million through T-shirt sales, corporate donations and various fundraisers.
The money raised provides opportunities for those with intellectual disabilities to receive year-round training activities, and funds the costs of the annual games. 160 nations around the world participate in the Special Olympics program.
“We are grateful to the following businesses that have sponsored the riders to make this effort into a fundraising successful,” said Andy Le Beau, a captain with the Boone Police Department: Watauga Democrat; Robson Forensic; Appalachian Management Services Inc.; Michael Wilson, attorney at law; Elk Valley Properties, Banner Elk; Nix Construction, Hilton Head, S.C.; the committee to elect Britt Springer DA; Image Options; Modern Subaru of Boone; Tom Speed, attorney at law; Josh Teague, attorney at law; Sam Furgiuele, attorney at law; CeraSport; Mellow Mushroom; Subaru of Hilton Head; Boone Bike and Touring; Charles Brady, attorney at law.
