Jerry Burns Day June 18
Blowing Rock Town commissioners voted in 2012 to celebrate a day to commemorate the biggest cheerleader the town has had in years – the late Jerry Burns, former editor of The Blowing Rocket for 44 years.
“We have missed Jerry these past three years as the ‘unofficial’ guardian of all that is good in the village; he promoted the town’s founders, characters, and all who truly celebrate their good fortune to live in our special village. We will gather to remember all that Jerry has given to the town and its people, who loved him so dearly,” according to officials with the Blowing Rock Historical Society.
“Jerry always wanted to celebrate the founding families of the town, and last year we did not have the opportunity to select a family, but this year The Blowing Rock Historical Society will host Ruby Moody Walters as its special guest, who will share memories of the Moody family, the Walters family and other descendants who helped form the town,” officials said.
The group will gather at Edgewood Cottage (inside or out) at 3 p.m. June 18 to hear Walters and some of her relatives share stories about the family.
It will be an informal storytelling time with questions from the audience, and followed by light refreshments.
“Please join us on Tuesday, June 18, to celebrate Jerry Burns and hear Mrs. Walters tell about her family,” officials said.
“For many years we planned to celebrate our founding families and will have a place to sign up for another year on June 18 to tell about your family in the coming years until we run out of special family stories,” organizers said. “We hope to record the information we learn for our oral history archives. Our founding families have provided a rich background of hard work, concern for the village and for each other.”
