Hiker retrieved after falling ill
According to Jim Landis with the Blowing Rock Fire and Rescue, a group of hikers had hiked down a rugged and steep trail on Sunday when a member of the group, an unidentified man in his 50s, became sick to the point where he did not have the strength to hike back up on his own.
Personnel from Blowing Rock Fire and Rescue, the Blowing Rock Police Department and Watauga Medics responded to a 911 call to give the man medical attention.
Emergency personnel used a Stokes basket, a gurney with a large wheel under it, to get him out of the woods and to a waiting ambulance.
“The trail was only a foot or so wide in many areas,” Landis said. “It was very steep with rocks and trees that were lying across it.”
Rescue personnel were able to overcome the rugged terrain and get the man to an ambulance. He was then transported to Watauga Medical Center.
Officials would not release the name of the man rescued.
