‘Bluegrass & Brass’ concert

Mountain Home Music will celebrate the Fourth of July — on the Fourth of July — with its annual presentation of “Bluegrass & Brass.”

The Mountain Home Bluegrass Boys will provide the bluegrass, and the King Street Brass will provide the brass.

“The sound is akin to New Orleans Dixieland, but with a banjo, fiddle and mandolin,” said Joe Shannon, founder and host of Mountain Home Music. “But it’s definitely Dixieland that’s from the Blue Ridge Mountains.”

“Bluegrass & Brass,” started in 1999, features bluegrass players Steve Lewis, a two-time national banjo champion; Scott Freeman, a Henderson Festival mandolin champion; and David Johnson, a member of the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame.

The King Street Brass features Harold McKinney, a trombonist from the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University; Bill Jones, a trumpeter and director of the International Brass Chamber Music Festival; Sarah Storm, a trumpeter and bagpipe player; Chris Watson, a tuba player and band teacher in Ashe County; and Judd Pinnix, a French horn player and a Watauga County teacher.

“‘Bluegrass & Brass’ features patriotic songs and marches, and each year the concert culminates with the service anthems,” Shannon said. “During these anthems, current soldiers and veterans are recognized and honored.”

The concert will be at the Blowing Rock School Auditorium in downtown Blowing Rock.

Starting time is 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door.  Student tickets are $10, and children’s tickets cost $5.

Tickets may be purchased at the Mast Store (Boone and Valle Crucis), Fred’s Mercantile on Beech Mountain, Kudzu Music (formerly Rydell’s) in Boone and at Pandora’s Mailbox and the Dulcimer Shop, both in the Martin House on Main Street in downtown Blowing Rock.

Tickets may also be purchased online though the Mountain Home Music website,
