Blowing Rock celebrates inaugural NC Beer Month
To coincide with the designation of April as Beer Month in North Carolina, Blowing Rock Tourism Development invites fans of fine spirits and craft brews to swing by downtown Saturday for the inaugural N.C. Brews Walkabout Tasting Tour.
BRTD Executive Director Tracy Brown said the day of sampling will feature a slew of local businesses and lodgings that will offer the distinctive taste of eight different breweries.
“This is the first time North Carolina has designated a month for the celebration of microbrews,” Brown said. “We have close to 80 breweries in North Carolina. It’s an up-and-coming industry. We have great beer here and more and more in the High Country.”
The list of participating breweries includes Appalachian Mountain Brewery, Aviator Brewery, Olde Hickory Brewery, Howard Brewing, Oskar Blues Brewery, Blind Squirrel Brewery, Boone Brewing Company, which is the producer of Blowing Rock Ale, and Highland Brewing Company.
Brown said maps of the participating locations will be on hand at each venue, but organizers will also point beer lovers in the right direction with easy-to-follow arrows on downtown sidewalks.
“There will be tastings around town in different venues,” Brown said. “People can stop in and sample for free what these breweries have available to the public. This should be a good opportunity for folks who don’t know craft beer to walk around town and sample different breweries.”
Some of the places folks can sample this weekend include Blowing Rock Market, Blowing Rock Produce and Provisions, Twigs, Canyons, Foggy Rock Eatery and Pub, Blowing Rock Art and History Museum, Green Park Inn and Homestead Inn.
In addition to the one-day tour, several local establishments are hosting monthlong celebrations in honor of beer month.
Mellow Mushroom, Canyons, Foggy Rock, Six Pence Pub and Bistro Roca, Blowing Rock Market and Blowing Rock Produce and Provisions have separate specialized programs to coincide with Beer Month.
Saturday’s sampling tour will feature lodging packages and a N.C. Beer Month beer stein from Traditions Pottery.
