Blessing of the animals service Sunday
This is one of the most inspirational services of the church year and welcomes all pet owners and animal lovers to bring his or her beloved pets, or any other of God’s creature, such as worms, birds, crickets, lizards, etc., to be blessed by Father Rick Lawler and Father Sam Talman.
Past services have included everything from goats, horses, rodents and bacteria. However, most of the creatures blessed are much-loved dogs and cats.
The patron saint of animals, St. Francis of Assisi, who was born in 1182, has inspired others to value all animals and creatures that are God’s creation. It is that inspiration that leads the church today to bring together people of all faiths to participate in the Blessing of the Animals, according to St. Mary officials.
In Blowing Rock, this tradition has been ongoing for many years.
“Please join us for Sunday’s service at 2 p.m. on the lawn in front of St. Mary’s. We ask that all animals be under the control of their owners at all times, either on a leash or in a cage or container,” church officials said.
