BRPD assists deputies

By Capt. Aaron Miller

Blowing Rock Police assisted Watauga County sheriff’s deputies in two incidents involving firearms last week.

The first incident occurred on Aug. 1. Blowing Rock Police officers assisted sheriff’s deputies in a vehicle stop on Valley Boulevard at Possum Hollow Road. The vehicle was allegedly transporting stolen merchandise, including several firearms.

The driver of the vehicle, Jason Eli Brown of Boone, was arrested by sheriff’s deputies and charged with possession of stolen goods.

A second incident occurred on Aug. 4. Blowing Rock Police officers were asked to assist sheriff’s deputies with a report of a suicidal subject in the parking lot of Tweetsie Railroad. Responding officers met a vehicle matching the description on U.S. 321 traveling into Blowing Rock. Officers stopped the vehicle and were able to take the armed subject into custody without incident. The subject was transported to Watauga Medical Center for evaluation.

A minor traffic accident was reported on Greenhill Road on July 30. The mirrors of a large tow truck struck a vehicle driven by Reid Edwin Clark of Peach Tree City, Ga. The tow truck was driven by Allen Curtis Blevins of Purlear. There were no injuries and damage was reported as minor.

A traffic accident on Valley Boulevard at Sunset Drive on Aug. 3 resulted in one arrest. Cassie Griffin Welsh, 59, of Blowing Rock reportedly failed to stop for a stopped vehicle at the intersection.

The other vehicle involved, a 2013 Toyota driven by Matthew Kyle Crump of Boone, was stopped at the intersection for a red light.

Blowing Rock Fire and Rescue responded to the scene, but all occupants of the vehicles refused to be transported.

Officers investigating the accident determined that alcohol was a factor in the accident. Welsh was arrested and charged with driving while impaired. Welsh was released by the magistrate on a written promise to appear in court.

Ten traffic citations were issued last week. Six of the citations were for speeding offenses. Other violations included driving while license revoked, inspection violations and transporting an open container.
