BRAHM presents magician Bill Spooner

By Jeff Eason

BRAHM’s first Membership Coffee of the 2014 season will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 13 in the Community Meeting Room of the Museum.

Friday’s presentation is entitled “Art in Magic/Magic in Art” and will feature special guest, local magician and Museum member Bill Spooner. According to Spooner, this presentation takes a visual trip through time to examine the many facets of how art and magic are interwoven in mystery, politics, espionage, sculpture, advertising, classical and modern art. The journey is infused with demonstrations of the earliest known magic effect to modern day miracles.

Bill developed a keen interest in science and magic at an early age. As a teacher and researcher, he spent most of his career with the North Carolina Department of Education in numerous roles from a TV science teacher, Director of Science, and Director of Instructional Service. He held an Adjunct Appointment at NCSU and collaborated with East Carolina University and Japan on an international research project. Bill was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in1993.

After retiring in 1997, he turned his focus to his avocation of magic. He has been a member of the world’s largest magic organization, the International Brotherhood of Magicians, for 61 years. He served as International President in 1985 and International Treasurer in 1990-1995. For his service he was elected an Honorary Member in 1993, and in 2012 received the organization’s highest recognition, The Medallion of Honor.

Bill is a recognized author, publisher, magic historian, inventor, collector, and international lecturer. He has received two coveted trophies for the best articles of the year published in The Linking Ring magic journal.  Three books and articles are currently in the works. Bill was a publishing partner in 2010 for the highly successful book Del Ray - America’s Foremost –The Magician for His Time.

Bill has been an active member of BRAHM since its inception. Bill and his wife LaRose are founding members of BRAHM, and are currently members of the Daingerfield Society of BRAHM.
